Medieval Museum, Waterford

Our bath stone helped this project win the New Build Modern Style Stone Cladding category at the Stone Federation’s Natural Stone Awards.

Waterford Medieval Museum is an architectural landmark and major visitor destination in the Southeast of Ireland. The Museum is located in the urban quarter, the oldest part of Waterford City and at its vibrant cultural heart, known as The Viking Triangle. It houses a magnificent collection of artifacts and hosts numerous public events.

The Building utilises both Stoke Ground Top Bed and Stoke Ground Base Bed Bath Stone on the Curved Facade. The overhang is unique in that the curve features on both the horizontal and vertical planes. McConnells cut the stone to millimetre accuracy and supplied all the steel manufacturers with the structural drawings to support the façade. The warm facing stone follows from its use in the original medieval Cathedral and Choristers’ Hall and provides a break from the cool crisp 18th century surrounding structures.
